Let’s take a deeper dive into exactly what a writing prompt is and how it can help you as a writer. Remember that writing is a creative process, even if you’re writing mathematical statistician notes in a class at university. Writing is simply you, an output method and a result. If we apply this to everything we do when we want to be creative, it might be a little easier. Also, “trying” to be creative won’t work. When you are feeling creative is the right time to be creative. Creativity cannot be forced, at least not in my experience of being a writer. It’s either there, or it isn’t.
One other essential thing about writing prompts is that it’s not a mission or a pre-requisite for anything more than what it is. It’s simply you, a method of creating words on or in a blank space and whatever you make. Don’t feel bad if you can’t think of anything relating to the prompt. Write down what you’re thinking and feeling without caring about the prompt too much. The prompt is merely a tool to get your creativity flowing when it’s stuck.
And if your creativity is just itching to come out, that’s fantastic! But we all know you cannot maintain a creative streak forever. Like anything else in life, it needs to be fed and watered so in other words, even your creative side needs a break every now and then.
And the last thing I think worth mentioning is that everyone is different. One of the most challenging parts of being a creative person is finding your “flow” and working with it when it comes. And if it decides to stay hidden for a little longer than you want it to, that is where writing prompts can really help.
Have you been using writing prompts in any of your writing lately? Please let me know in the comments as I’d love to hear about other writers and their personal methods of getting through a creative “dry patch”.
I hope you have an exciting and creative day and please be safe out there!
