Writing Update – JANUARY 2021

The New Year has already come and gone and I’ve realised that I am getting very close to the end of Ethan and Milly’s story. That is going to mean a few things for me as a writer. First, I will be able to decide what I want to do with the story if anything. Second, I will be able to revisit some of my other stories and either continue to develop and write them or start something completely new. And lastly, I made a quiet New Year’s resolution to myself about my writing and promised I would put myself out there this year. And so far, I’ve managed to score a writing gig on a movie website that will get me a lot more exposure as a writer. It’s not paid but it’s a start. I am not looking specifically for paid positions currently. I am just working on getting myself out there and writing for someone other than myself. As a writer, I need to remain disciplined which means I need to work with an editor again.

The interesting thing about writing for someone other than myself means my writing has taken on a totally different tone. I can already notice it in the one article that was published today on their site. This is great for me as a writer because I have been writing and editing my own work for some time now. I need to get back into the habit of writing more formally and tighter than I do when I write for myself.

So it’s a start. Little steps for me but a start is a start. What will you be doing with your writing this year? It is a new year and that can mean many things to different people but usually, it’s a time to let go of things holding you back. Take a risk and see how things pan out. Since publishing my writing on this blog I have learned a lot in that short space of time. I have confidence in myself again which I couldn’t manage before. I have finished a NaNoWriMo which has also helped me move beyond restrictions I was putting on myself creatively. I feel much better in this creative space than I have in a long time.

Let’s see where this year takes us… to better places, to better experiences and to learning and growing as a person and a writer. That is what I hope for you all and for myself.

Till my next update – stay safe out there!

If you’re new to my blog – thank you for coming and welcome! I will assume you’re here for the writing and you can read my Tales of the West series starting with Milly’s story (Part I) and Ethan’s follow-up story recently completed (Part II).

  2. This year, I’m going back to a full-time job, since it’s been a couple years of me playing at author. It’s resulted in a bunch of interesting events, but reality calls, and I now have to save up once more to do it once again. Here’s to achieving our writing goals one by one!

    • Ah hey there πŸ™‚ I hope you had a happy new year and a nice holiday! And yes, I know what you mean. When I was freelancing, I remember it being difficult to get writing jobs and stay employed full-time which is why I stopped too. But I am slowly going back to writing even if it’s for free. I am building that base to work from slowly but surely πŸ™‚ Good luck to you as well Stuart!
